50 Years OF SERVICE
Fifty years ago – on March 28, 1970 – the Immaculate Heart Community was formed. As a formerly canonical religious community, we were being called into a larger life and truth. Now, we are a vibrant ecumenical community working toward peace, justice, and joy for all.
This past year, we wanted to celebrate this half century milestone by creating an expression of ourselves, modeled after the irregular bulletin, that is both a recounting of things that happened in 2019 and also a broader recounting of our history these last 50 years.
Discover the irregular bulletin
In conjunction with our annual report, we’ve produced a short video about the irregular bulletin so you can learn more about this brilliant part of IHC’s history.
The Immaculate Heart Community, founded in 1970, is a nonprofit public benefit corporation in the faith tradition.
We work toward peace and justice for all peoples, with a dedicated focus on the arts, women, immigration, and the environment.
Our Programs
Casa Esperanza
Casa Esperanza is a youth and family development center located in Panorama City. We provide a variety of neighborhood and community support services, including after school enrichment, summer camp and adult education.
La Casa de Maria and Center for Spiritual Renewal
La Casa de Maria and Center for Spiritual Renewal has historically been a retreat and a sanctuary of peace where guests come to renew their sense of purpose. We are currently rebuilding the retreat center with a focus on regenerative and resilient environmental practice.
IHM Residence
Through the Kenmore Residence, the Immaculate Heart Community provides affordable housing and a sense of community for our elderly members, along with transitional housing units for young families.
Corita Art Center
The Corita Art Center preserves and promotes Corita Kent’s artistic and educational legacy, along with her passion for peace and justice.
Our Commissions
Commission on Justice for Immigrants & Refugees
We advocate for and act on behalf of individuals, women with children, and families who have relocated in our communities across the U.S. and face arrest, detention, deportation by ICE.
Commission for the Environment
We believe that one of the great moral issues of our time is our continual destruction of the Earth. We have been instituting sustainable practices in all of our holdings, with a focus on La Casa de Maria.
Commission on Justice for Women
We seek to encourage women’s intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth, as well as participation and leadership in secular, spiritual, and political communities.
